Big Crowd Expected at Malibu Skate Park Meeting

Papa Jack's Skate Park property owner Steve Soboroff says he cannot extend the deadline for the park's closure.

The skate park subcommittee will hold a session on Wednesday at 12 p.m. that skate park advocates are calling an "emergency meeting."

The two-hour session will include a discussion on finding a new (possibly temporary) home for a Malibu skate park. If one cannot be found, advocates hope property owner Steve Soboroff would extend the deadline for the closure of past Oct. 31, Malibu resident Walter Lohr said on Monday.

Soboroff told Malibu Patch that he cannot extend the deadline, and noted he has a signed agreement with the city. He said the skate park must close prior to the beginning of the environmental analysis for the Whole Foods planned for the site.

If Papa Jack's remained open, Soboroff said, analysis of the skate park's relationship with the property would have to be included in the environmental impact report, and he does not want to do that.

One flier about the Wednesday meeting states, "Parents urged to show up [and] bring kids and skates if possible!"

Lohr said there is no demand for parents to pull their children out of school for the meeting, and nobody is being told to do anything they do not want to do.

The city has been operating Papa Jack's rent-free for several years after a lease expired. Soboroff issued a notice to the city in December to remove the skate park within 90 days. The deadline has since been extended to Oct. 31.

Several options have been proposed as possible homes for the new skate park, including , the parking lot and the . Soboroff has offered $25,000 toward the relocation cost.

The meeting will take place in the Zuma Room of .
