Do a Good Deed on Valentine's Day
The spirit of Malibu resident Emily Shane, who died in 2010 at age 13, will be in the hearts of many people on Tuesday, which has been proclaimed Pass It Forward Day.
The people of Malibu are being asked to share the love on Tuesday, which is Valentine's Day, in the spirit of the Emily Shane Foundation's message of "Pass It Forward."
The Malibu City Council last month proclaimed Feb. 14 as Pass It Forward Day.
"In honor of Emily Rose Shane and the values she represented, [the council] encourages the entire Malibu community, especially young people, to go out of their way to do a good deed on that day and post it on the Emily Shane Foundation webpage at www.emilyshane.org," the council's proclamation states.
Emily was killed in April 2010 at age 13 when she was struck by a vehicle while standing on the shoulder of Pacific Coast Highway near Heathercliff Road. Following her death, Emily's parents Michel and Ellen created the foundation in her memory.
The Emily Shane Foundation encourages people to do good deeds and write about them on the website, with the goal to reach 100 million good deeds. The foundation also funds a program at the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District called Successful Educational Achievement, which provides tutoring to students who have learning or processing issues.
Regarding Pass It Forward Day, Mayor Laura Zahn Rosenthal said in a press release issued by the city, "Pass It Forward Day not only honors Emily Shane, but the values she represented. Emily is remembered for her caring spirit and the random acts of kindness she would perform on a regular basis. This day also exemplifies the small town feeling of Malibu and the neighborliness of its residents to better the lives of others."
Editor's Note: The plan to form a world record-sized purple heart at Malibu High School on Pass It Forward Day has been canceled.
