Malibu in the Media

"Malibu Country," a pilot picked up by ABC starring Reba McEntire, will feature a "materialistic and rarified" Malibu.

To the residents of Malibu and others who are actually familiar with the city beyond the cameras of TMZ, Malibu is a rural city with a small-town feel that does not exist anywhere else in Southern California. But this is not how Malibu is perceived by many people outside the 90265.

It was announced earlier this month that singer/actress Reba McEntire will star in a television pilot that was picked up by ABC called "Malibu Country." The description in the Hollywood Reporter shows this is probably not going to be something that will be the pride of Malibu.

The half-hour project centers on Reba, who divorces her cheating husband and moves her family from Nashville to Malibu. There she'll try to reignite her own singing career and keep herself and three kids from being corrupted by the materialistic and rarified Malibu world she now calls home.

Are there materialistic people in Malibu? Of course. Every city has them. Are they the people who define this city? No.

Hopefully, the pilot will be a complete failure and the TV show will never take off. But if it does, this could be six or seven years of Malibu portrayed in a poor light on a weekly basis for laughs.

This brings up some interesting issues that I would like Malibu Patch readers to discuss in the comments section below. Why is there a bad perception of Malibu? How can it be changed, and is this even possible? If you had control of making a TV show about Malibu, what would it be like?

Quoting you: "Hopefully, the pilot will be a complete failure and the TV show will never take off. " <<< You wonder why Malibu might have a bad perception? Check your attitude!

It's a tv show!!! Not a reality show!!! Reba is a great actress and comedienne. I would love it if she did a show with my hometown named in it. Malibu should be proud!!! The reporter who wrote this needs to do more research before making such a rude negative comment hoping the "......pilot will be a complete failure and the TV show will never take off". Here's hoping you have the same kind of day!! Just saying......

What is with all the fake names? Be proud of what you have to say. "Clark," my attitude is great. As editor of MALIBU Patch, why would I want anything other than the worst for a show that is going to portray this city in a bad and false light? "MalibuResident," I am yet to hear anybody in Malibu demand more sushi spots or valet dry cleaners. "Rita," what research do I need to do? I never claimed this was a reality show.

I thought the city hired someone to tackle the issue of bad press and publicity? I know the city is paying a salary to someone who's job title is Public Relations, but we also paid large sums to a lobbyist in Sacramento that was supposed to deliver on promises as well. Are you saying that the PR position is not currently filled? The City Council needs to be addressing these questions rather than residents, we're tired of getting hoarse throats asking and asking and asking - only to get a study or a grant offering for outsiders to "perform" without seeing the direct results delivered.
I'd like to do "Evolution in My Backyard" type of a nature show that encourages others to notice the small things in their immediate realm and to do everything they can to protect that habitat for future generations. We no longer see coveys of quail in their formation style of cruising, no more roadrunners gracing the Point either, haven't seen the cougar for a few years now.....many more bunnies and ground squirrels and other "varmit" populations seem to be increasing. Evolution in My Schoolyard....that's something to do even without TV cameras!!!

As the mom of a Malibu High student/athlete, who traveled to other locations for sports, I can say we don't need any more wrong/ridiculous perceptions about our city! I witnessed firsthand how negatively "we" were treated because we were from Malibu. It bothers me most because it affected my child and the other athletes. As an adult I'm not affected by what people think about Malibu, but when students are being treated unfairly that is another matter. So, I'm against a show that portrays someone having to "keep herself and three kids from being corrupted by the materialistic and rarified Malibu world she now calls home." What the heck does that even mean?? I never had to do that with my kids and they are fine!

I want Malibu to have all that it deserves. I hope they drop "Funniest Home Videos", first. Jonathan, is that your real name?

Malibu has earned its bad rep. Local businesses have pretty much been shut down.. Look at the stores in Malibu. Look at the empty spaces. Jonathan, your moronic hope for someone's project to fail so it doesn't make Malibu look bad... makes Malibu look bad. You're a snob and your attitude is elitist.
Bigger houses. Expensive cars. Tons of plastic surgery. Divorces. Nannies raising locals' kids. Drug problems for kids and parents alike. Of course, that's not everyone... but most.
Rural? On what planet?

Thanks for the survey information, "Jackie." The above person is also an alias. It is strange that all those who write the bold statements are afraid to use real names. What's the fear?

Are we all having a Dan Quayle moment? It's a TV show, people. Let's try to remember how well a sense of humor might serve us all. Save the angst for real world issues.

Hmmm. ABC/Disney just recycles its own material. This show sounds like a straight rip off of Hannah Montana. Miley Cyrus left her pure country existence to settle in Malibu on the show, and what happened to her?

I for one love Malibu. I live here, my office is here, my kids go to school here, my close friends are here. I think that we all have to agree, that when push comes to shove, this little community really does rally together. It's a small town without being small minded and I believe that is very hard to find. I'm grateful that I get to be a part of this community. Difference of opinion and all, you are a great group of people. Now, if they showed that in a TV show, would anyone believe it? But its the truth, we know it, and that's why we live here.

From a Google searc: "".....act, The Groundlings, involving a lot- of people," he explained. my part, I invented a character Jackie Muldavin, a repulsive and hostile Catskills Mountain comic."
Whoever "Jackie Muldavin" is on the Patch, we can be sure he/she/it is a cowardly punk, dogging Malibu for no good reason. Why not take a hike, you dumb troll?

Marshall, I hike the trails, while you're Googling. Bold statements, but the truth. We have kids here and don't need retribution.

Then be nice. Enjoy your hike. This is a nice community and we get a lot of hate from know-nothings and I chose to defend my town. With my real name. And I have kids here. If you want to help rather than hurt, why not join CERT or do something else to actually help this great community? (crickets..)

I work as a makeup artist in the film industry and even though there might be some people that would perceive Malibu in a negative light, I think most viewers are going to be enjoying the comedy surrounding Reba's situation. Viewers really love her, the city is just a background. It sounds like "Beverly Hills 90210", where the family had to relocate to BH. After the initial storyline of dealing with being transplanted, the story line settled down and it was just was about the daily situations complicating their lives. At least this is not a pseudo-reality show promoting grown-up mean girls.

What can anyone expect from a community that has allowed itself to be run by purely commercial interests & self -aggrandizement. Look at the caliber of development, the type of stores. The Chamber of commerce hasn't helped a bit to keep Malibu a rural desirable community. Instead of preserving our natural resources we've denigrated them. We don't live in & around them, we expect them to be tamed to be to our needs!! The horses I used to ride locally are now unwelcome. Look what became of the Lagoon!
Now we have paranoid residents who've built or fenced over public rights of way. Just look up & down the Coast Highway from Topanga to the Pier - it's an eyesore - a lot of it.

The City does deals with these people them. What for?

We cater to "Celebrity". We allow financial excesses. And now we're in an uproar (as am I, incidentally) about some cheapening of Malibu's supposed image on TV.

We are responsible for this, Don't think we can do much to stop it apart from refusing to lend our land or houses even fir monetary gain. Somehow. Those of similar disposition, need to, in my humble opinion, find a way to claw back our dignity as a community. Why do we need to be high profile? Tourist do flock to "quaint, ethnic & rural"; much beyond that they can get the identical things in their own globalised environments!! Cont'd/

The latest Cross Creek development? Mostly useless from a residents's standpoint, the Lumberyard, endless non-affordable housing/tracts, tearing up the geology & at the expense of wildlife.

Would love Malibu not to be a feature for public consumption, but nurturing it's natural attributes and encouraging, at the very least, a semi-rural if not wholly rural way of life; care for our elderly, vulnerable etc., & ease of environment for our workers. An appreciated - loved place.

Not sure we stand much chance; anymore than one can persuade the Country to give up using their Credit Cards/Bank Cards for a week - 10 days in order to bring the financial institutions into line!

We can try to exert "damage limitation" & slowly reverse the excesses of commercial indulgence (tackiness) of the last few years . I would favour the philosophy that Malibu is an environment of which we are merely privileged guardians , let's hope some people out there feel the same way.
