New Malibu Home Possible for Diesel, A Bookstore

The bookstore owners are in negotiation for a space at Malibu Country Mart.

Diesel, A Bookstore's absence in Malibu could be short-lived. Malibu Country Mart owner Michael Koss said at Monday's City Council meeting that he had a “lease out for signature with Diesel.” The bookstore closed earlier this year after nearly seven years at nearby Malibu Village (former Cross Creek Plaza) because co-owner John Evans said the rent had become unsustainable.

In a Tuesday email to Malibu Patch, Evans wrote, “We are in negotiation on a lease and hope to work something out within the next few weeks.”

Malibu residents Evans and Alison Reid had planned to reopen the bookstore in Malibu if it was possible. Evans told Malibu Patch in February when he announced the closure, “My hope is that we will find something else in Malibu. But Malibu has always been tricky. And it has become much more competitive recently, which is odd with this economy.”

There are also Diesel shops in Brentwood and Oakland.

Are you looking forward to the possible return of Diesel? Tell us in the comments.

Yes, I would be thrilled to see John and Allison reopen Diesel in Malibu. They epitomize all that's best about locally-operated small businesses. If you ever visited their store and asked for reading suggestions, you received an abundance of intelligent, personal attention. They expanded my list of favorite authors ten-fold. The many lectures and book signings they held were another sign of their commitment to keep Malibu informed and literate. I urge everyone that reads Malibu Patch to patronize Diesel when and if it reopens. We need them.

So hoping that this works out for Diesel. We need our bookstore back, and would love to see landlords welcoming local businesses by maintaining affordable rents for them! Great news!

I'd prefer a high end clothing store! Malibu needs it.
