Passages Malibu's Flowered Logo to be Removed from PCH

Malibu's planning director says landscaping cannot be used to make a sign in Malibu.

The large, flowered logo that was recently installed on the mountainside of the 27000 block of Pacific Coast Highway will be taken down, a spokeswoman for the drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility told Malibu Patch. A witness said the removal began Tuesday morning.

Joyce Parker-Bozylinski, Malibu's planning director, said landscaping or rocks cannot be used to make "signs" in Malibu. Passages agreed to remove the logo, which is located near the facility entrance, after the city informed the facility about this.

Jonathan Kaye, who lives near Passages, filed a formal complaint with the city about the logo. He estimated it was more than 600 square feet in size, and wrote in an email to Malibu Patch that it was "blight, a shameless embarrassment to the city, a traffic hazard and nonnative floral graffiti."

Kaye also analyzed various maps and questioned whether Passages had planted on a trail easement and possibly Los Angeles County property. Parker-Bozylinski told Malibu Patch she was uncertain whether the logo was located on a trail easement.

Michele Lanfrank, a brand strategist in Passages' Marketing and Branding Department, said the logo "represents healing for our clients," and that Passages "thought it was green and aligned with Malibu."
