Rally at the Lagoon
Opponents of the Malibu Lagoon overhaul project hold protest signs and call for the governor to "Stop the bulldozers."
Opponents of the Malibu Lagoon overhaul project were out in force Saturday afternoon at the entrance on Pacific Coast Highway to protest the project, which is set to begin June 1. They rallied with signs containing the slogan "Stop the bulldozers" and a banner telling people to contact Gov. Jerry Brown, and ask him to put a halt to the plan. Even a giant frog joined the rally.
The State Parks project includes the replacement of non-native vegetation with native vegetation and other features proponents say will increase oxygen flow, and make a healthier lagoon. It received the OK from all the necessary state agencies, including a permit from the California Coastal Commission in October. Opponents say the project will harm the lagoon and those that call it home. They filed a lawsuit against the plan in December.
A San Francisco Superior Court judge will decide May 9 whether a preliminary injunction should be granted to prevent the start of the project prior to the opponents’ lawsuit going to court in the fall.
