If you are planning to shop in Santa Monica, be sure to bring extra cash, although coins would probably do the trick. A half-cent city sales tax approved by Santa Monica voters in November went into effect Friday morning to bring the total tax rate to 10.25 percent. This will not affect the purchase of vehicles, which are taxed based on where they are licensed. There is no city sales tax in Malibu.
Malibu residents could benefit from the Santa Monica tax because voters also approved an advisory measure that half the estimated $12 million in annual sales tax revenue “support school, educational and afterschool programs.” This would include the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, and the money would go to the whole district, not just the Santa Monica schools.
Santa Monica College District officials have said they also want some of the tax money. The Santa Monica City Council is expected to address the advisory measure at a meeting April 22, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press.

No - if Malibu does not pay the extra tax, they should not benefit from it.

Just one more reason to shop over the hill. Same distance. Less crowded. No traffic. Free Parking. Lower prices.

Addie, plenty of Malibu people do pay the tax. Most of the shopping done in Santa Monica is not done by locals. It is done by the hundreds of thousands of people who visit the city everyday, including Malibu residents.

Sales tax rate in Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks is 8.25%. They seem to be able to handle their business on that rate. Sales tax in Malibu is 9.25%. We get by. Not sure why 10.25% is necessary, especially when it is in perpetuity, with no sunset clause.

For clarification, Malibu's sales tax is 9.75%. Malibu and Santa Monica have the same tax rate except for the Santa Monica city portion. Lester's numbers are accurate on Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village.

I stand corrected on the rate, but maintain my position on the question at hand....
