Weekend Work Begins on Malibu Lagoon Project

Work will take place seven days a week at the Malibu Lagoon in order to finish a restoration project by mid-March.

The request by California State Parks for weekend work was granted on Friday, Feb. 1 by the California Coastal Commission. Work was originally expected to wrap up in December, but the permit was extended due to weather and other delays.

The latest extension is needed to finish work by a March 15 deadline, according to Suzanne Goode, Senior Environmental Scientist at California State Parks.

"There are so many little odds and ends that need to get done. It's so nice to have that cushion of time," Goode said.

Goode said the contractor, Ford E.C., Inc., had originally assumed weekends would be included in the original extension request, but that was accidentally left out.

The contractor is currently installing the strips that will hold up gravel and decomposed granite for the walkways around the lagoon.

"Whenever it rains, they lose two to three days," Goode said. "... Once that work is done, then we won't lose any more time."

She said there is progress every time she goes down to the project.

"We're getting some more plants in a couple of weeks," Goode said, adding that current plants have been steadily growing. "... It's going to take awhile before you can really see them."

Goode said she believes the project looks great, pointing to a recent aerial photo published by KCET.com.
