Hospice Volunteer Training Offered October 18-20

Learn how to provide comfort and emotional support to home hospice patients at an intensive 20-hour course offered by Los Angeles Hospice at Anam Cara the weekend of October 18-20 in Topanga. The hours are Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. and both Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The address will be provided upon registration.

Accredited by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, the training is suitable for volunteers, professional caregivers, and other individuals wishing to provide terminally ill people with a peaceful, dignified end-of-life experience. The course is customized for home hospice volunteers but utilizes the curriculum of The Twilight Brigade, a national nonprofit hospice training and veteran service organization.

The training will be led by Mitcheal A. Metzner, PhD, MEd, Los Angeles Hospice at Anam Cara CEO and former Los Angeles Chapter director and lead trainer for The Twilight Brigade; Los Angeles Hospice at Anam Cara CFO Gabe Gelbart; and Shelley Whizin, CEO of Soul Diving Institute and Board Member of Los Angeles Hospice at Anam Cara.

During the training, participants will learn:

·         How to provide unconditional positive regard

·         How to be present

·         How to sincerely listen and refrain from problem solving

·         How to facilitate the life review with an emphasis on appreciation and closure

·         How to maintain privacy and confidentiality

·         How to heal fears surrounding death and dying

·         How to be a loving source of support and strength through the dying process

Participants who complete the course will receive a joint certificate from The Twilight Brigade and Los Angeles Hospice at Anam Cara.

A donation of $200 or more is suggested, however no one will be turned away for lack of funds. The Los Angeles Chapter of The Twilight Brigade will receive 50 percent of up to $100 of each donation. All donations are processed through Los Angeles Hospice at Anam Cara's fiscal sponsor, c3: the Center for Conscious Creativity.
