The Reiss-Davis Child Study Center & Institute present the 2013-2014 monthly series of SATURDAYS at the CENTER for Mental Health Professionals Serving Children, Adolescents & Parents

Please join us for this Saturday’s program on campus from 9:30 am-12:30 pm: Music and the Internal World: Reclaiming the Muse in the Child and Client. 3 CEU’s offered.

Dr Bishop, Ph.D. is a psychoanalyst in private practice and the Chair of the Depth Psychotherapy Program at Pacifica Graduate Institute, where he has taught Music and the Internal World  for the last 12 years. He is a former Post-Doctoral Fellow at Reiss-Davis and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Beethoven Society.

Dr. Bishop notes, "Too often a child's muse is neglected or discouraged, leaving him/her without one of the most potent stimulators of imagination and emotional stimulation." In this didactic and experiential presentation, he will examine the role of absolute music in the elaboration of the affectively charged internal world of the young person.

He will address the concept of "counter-transference responsivity" as a form of music appreciation as well as exploring the role of the therapist as audience to his/her clients' struggles to sing their song and thus sing themselves. Expanding silence and less dependence on language in the therapeutic contact will also be encouraged. And throughout the presentation, he will survey current research on the interface of musical experience and psychoanalysis.
