The city is rebuilding a 25-year-old deep gravel arrester bed in the middle of the road, which is intended to give trucks and other large vehicles a way to stop at the bottom of an 8 percent downgrade.

The original arrester bed was installed after two fatal crashes were caused by runaway vehicles on Kanan-Dume at PCH.
