Herb Alpert's Black Totom 'Freedom' Installed at Old Malibu Courthouse

The sculpture was installed just days before Herb Alpert was honored by President Barack Obama.

A 17-foot high sculpture by Malibu artist Herb Alpert has been put on display at the Old Malibu Courthouse.

Alpert worked with property owners Kimberly Devane and Larry Abbott to display the bronze sculpture "Freedom," which is part of a series of work entitled “Black Totems.” It was installed on July 2 at the intersection Rambla Pacifica and Pacific Coast Highway.

The sculpture was installed just days before Alpert was honored by President Barack Obama with a 2012 National Medal of Arts and National Humanities Medal at the White House.

The Malibu musician, who is behind the Tijuana Brass phenomenon and co-founder of A&M Records, is also known for his philanthropy in arts education.

Devane said she asked Alpert if he would be willing to provide art for public display in Malibu.

"It was as simple and easy as that," Devane said. "I sent he and his wife a hand-written letter explaining our interest in art, and our willingness to provide a historically significant place to showcase his sculpture. He responded with an invitation to his studio, where he quickly chose and offered the perfect sculpture for this location.”

Abbott, who co-owns the courthouse property said Malibu's citizens owe Alpert a debt of gratitude for his generosity.

“This project is the result of friendship and community and one Malibu citizen reaching out to another to do something good for the city,” Abbott said.

The property is the location of the original Malibu Courthouse.
