Malibu High: Panic in Paradise

As a community, we must reflect on this salient fact: If our eyes had been opened earlier to what may be a calamity, perhaps then we could have prevented injury to our health!

"Panic in Paradise" ....the headline in England's Guardian

How could what is unfolding at Malibu High happen in one of the country’s most affluent and best educated areas? Certainly we take an interest in our community.  And we look to our leaders for complete transparency. Right now, we have more questions than answers.

It pleased me to learn that several parents from the high school have joined together to open a private investigation into the matter. We cannot expect infallibility and perfection, but must demand integrity and accountability.  How blessed are we to live in a country that allows us the freedom to question authority.

Throughout my childhood I read countless stories of neighborhoods faced with perils such as the one possibly now facing the citizens of Malibu. These stories recounted how through communal reflection, individuals performed acts of goodness and extended kindness to others. And, for those who were in danger, there was a positive shift in their fate.

Individual acts of goodness and kindness. What a concept! One thing’s for sure… it couldn't hurt.
