A Special Relationship: Malibu's Glen Campbell and Friend/Producer Julian Raymond

Glen Campbell and Julian Raymond have a special relationship. Glen just awarded for Lifetime acheivment at the Grammys

One of the all-time greats, a legend, a voice that transcends definition, the great Glen Campbell is all of that and more.

Just last week Glen performed at the 54th Grammy Awards and was given a lifetime achievement award for his vast contribution as a musician, singer and performer.

His most recent role, however, is that of a crusader for Alzheimer's disease.

Glen was diagnosed a few years ago and, although working and performing ever since, has decided courageously to bring attention to his personal battle with Alzheimer's disease. He is experiencing a "rebirth" at a time when his Alzheimer’s and his age of 74 would have him fading out of the public spotlight.

With the help of dedicated producer and friend, Julian Raymond, Glen Campbell has released his second straight critically acclaimed album in the last three years. His most recent album, Ghosts on a Canvas, a collection of all original songs that weaves through Glen's life like a tapestry, was released in November to strong reviews. USA Today rated it one of the top ten albums of 2011.

Julian envisioned this to be Glen's farewell album; most of the songs were co-written by Glen and Julian in an attempt to create a concept piece that reflects Glen's current state of mind. It’s a "look back" on a storied and sometimes tumultuous life and career.

Julian grew up a Glen Campbell fan, mesmerized by one of the finest session guitar players ever and further enchanted by a voice that is extraordinary.

Julian sums it up this way, "Glen's voice is exceptional for its articulation. You can hear every word that is written, and the intangibles are amazing. Add to that a perfect pitch and I would give his voice an overall A+."

Julian had the idea of bringing Glen to a new generation; a generation that missed the first wave of Glen Campbell that hit through the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. He soon found out that Glen still had that fantastic command of his singing voice and a charisma and charm that earned him a spot hosting his own television show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, for four years on prime time.

It is quite poignant to see Julian, in a true labor of love, trying to give the gift of Glen Campbell to an ever growing audience in the U.S. and overseas. Julian produced Glen's first comeback album Meet Glen Campbell with his own production company.

This return album was also greeted universally with high praise. Most "comeback" albums end up in the junk heap, poorly conceived and poorly received; not so under Julian Raymond's master guidance. Julian not only knew how best to showcase Glen musically, but he has also has the personality and sensitivity to nurture a legend who has lost a few tricks.

"Glen at 75 percent is better than most at 100 percent, he's just that good a musician," said Julian. Another producer might not have had the temperament and sincerity to win acceptance with Glen and his wife, Kim.

"We knew with Julian we were getting a great producer who also had love for the project and Glen's legacy," said Kim Campbell.

A special touch is to see Glen performing with his three youngest kids. The band has been touring to sellout crowds all over the world, from Royal Albert Hall in London to the Kodak theatre in Los Angeles. They understand that though he may not always be at his best, his courage and his heart will carry him through. Julian defers any credit for this triumphant coda, preferring to heap it all on his close friend, the "Rhinestone Cowboy" of whom he said, "He's truly one of the all-time greats."

The battle against Alzheimer's will perhaps be closer to an end as a result of Glen's courage, and Julian's selfless dedication to reflecting the warmth and greatness of a man he so loves and admires.

Yes, he is the "Rhinestone Cowboy” … riding out (gracefully) and with his family by his side "in a star spangled Rodeo."
