Leaking Septic System Source of Malibu Sewage Spill

Los Angeles County Health officials re-open the 100-yard stretch of beach near Big Rock Drive in Malibu Friday.

A leaking septic system at a single family home on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu was the source of a sewage spill this week, according to a Los Angeles County health official.

"They couldn't tell how much sewage was leaking," Bernard Franklin, L.A. County's Chief Environmental Health Specialist told Malibu Patch. The closure of a 100-yard stretch of beach at 19830 Pacific Coast Highway near Big Rock Drive was precautionary, Franklin said.

The single-family home was red tagged by the city of Malibu, according to Franklin.

The beach, which closed Tuesday, was reopened Friday afternoon, he said.
