Chipotle Soft Opening Draws Large Crowd

On the eve of the grand opening, Chipotle briefly opened its doors to an invitation-only preview at the new Malibu location on Cross Creek Road.

Dozens came out Tuesday to a soft opening of Chipotle in Malibu.

A line of people with tickets snaked out the door for the invitation-only preview, which included a free meal, chips and a drink.

Kristin Vosper of Malibu wrote on Twitter: "First Malibu @chipotle meal. There will be 100s more I'm sure."

The Colorado-based chain is set to open its doors to the public at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24. It's regular hours will be from 11 a.m to 9 p.m. daily. The eatery is located next to True Religion at the Malibu Village on Cross Creek Road.

Some Malibu locals have said they don't plan on eating at Chipotle and prefer to patronize Howdy's Taqueria Malibu across the street at the Malibu Country Mart.

Rick Metzler wrote earlier this month on Malibu Patch's Facebook page: "[I] tried Chipotle for the first time in Woodland Hills and thought the set-up was interesting and I could see how they'll make a run at the tourists but I would never choose them over Howdy's and don't expect that any local would."

Others also expressed support for Howdy's, which recently overhauled its menu and updated its patio seating area.

"[I go to ] Howdies when I want Mexican from that area. Chipotle is OK. I eat it when I travel but it isn't what I want in Malibu," Jamie Ottilie wrote on Facebook.
