Malibu Hardware and Masonry Supply Opens

The store has a nursery and sells masonry supplies, hardware, garden redwood, items to make planters, building materials, cement, drywall and "a little bit of lumber."

A new Malibu business quietly went into operation Monday morning at the corner of Cross Creek Road and Civic Center Way. Malibu Hardware and Masonry Supply, owned by Malibu resident Dave Anawalt, had a soft opening, and is expected to have a grand opening in the fall.

"We are selling a little hardware, nursery [items], garden redwood, things to make planters out of, building materials, cement, drywall, masonry [supplies] and 'a little bit of lumber.'"

Anawalt said selling masonry supplies is the initial focus because the previous tenant used the property as a masonry yard.

"Since the previous tenant sold a little bit of lumber, we'll sell a little bit of lumber," Anawalt said. "And if there's demand, we'll bring in more products. The community will dictate what products are required."

He said this would include expanding the lumber operation. Since Malibu Lumber closed in 2005, there has been a demand by many people in Malibu for a new lumber store to open. Among those residents is Dick Van Dyke, who told Malibu Patch the opening of "a nice hardware store" was .

Although Malibu has been without a lumber store for more than six years, it has had a hardware store during this time.  is located in the mall at the corner of Rambla Pacifico and Pacific Coast Highway.

Anawalt said he is excited about opening a store in the city where he lives.

"It's kind of a dream," he said. "I've been trying to get a facility here in Malibu ever since Malibu Lumber left."

Anawalt's family has been in the lumber retail business since 1923, when it opened Anawalt Lumber in West Los Angeles. He attempted to buy Malibu Lumber in 2005. After the city took over the property, Anawalt was one of the bidders to lease the site, but he lost out to a team of Richard Weintraub and Richard Sperber, which eventually opened the Malibu Lumber Yard mall. Anawalt also attempted to lease the nearby city property where Super Care Drugs is located.

The new store sits on a 44,000-square-foot site owned by the Adamson family. Anawalt declined to get into specifics on the lease, but he said he expects to be in business "for the foreseeable future."

"We want to be a part of the community and stay in the community for as long as possible," Anawalt said.

Malibu Hardware and Masonry Supply, located at 3730 Cross Creek Road, is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If there is demand for it, the store could eventually open on Sundays. The phone number is 310-456-2772.

This is fantastic news! It seems like yesterday that I strolled through Malibu Lumber with my kids shopping for cool stuff! Hopefully the first order of business will be to put in a call to Dick Van Dyke and get his shopping list for the new store. He's been such a good spokesperson for all of us!

This is really exciting news and The Pit Malibu will do whatever we can to drive business your way. Please let us know if you have any fliers or anything else that we can put up on our bulletin board at the school to inform everyone. Congratulations !!!

Dave- Thank you for giving Malibu a store we need. I am so happy that I won't have to go to A and B anymore and get ripped off. That place irked me more than any other business in Malibu. You better not try to sell any Gucci hammers or we'll have to get out our farm house replica Ralph Lauren pitchforks and carbon neutral, hemp soy torches and express our feelings .

Excellent! But now it is our turn, my friends. Take Home Depot off the shopping list. Support the local guys.

100% agree. Locals - we have to shop/eat local to keep our wonderful independent places in business! So we might pay a few dollars more - think of the wear and tear on our cars driving over canyons, gas, oil and time. Shopping local means we put our money back into our own town. It's a win - win. Great point, Hans.

This has made my day! Week! Summer! Very exciting news to finally have an excellent family store back in Malibu with a terrific track record. I have been driving to Anawalts in town for years, as its been a favorite of mine. To have a good hardware and nursery (which we need badly too) is a major event for me. Having PATCH everyday while I am up here in Canada really keeps me posted. Thank you and Good Luck. Joan Almond

Went there to purchase over $400 worth of items for recent move...electrical, security and even plants but before I got started with my shopping I requested they cut a 14 inch rod in half...they guy says to me," well after I cut and CHARGE YOU for the cut then we can look at the rest". Now I was dressed a bit casual but to be spoken to with that GREED and SELF ENTITLEMENT attitude...I did an about face and spent over $600 at home depot, yup needed more then I thought and they said, " we'd feel pretty bad about ourselves and our store if we had to charge for such a cut particularly considering what you spent with us, and we're happy you chose us over the local rip-off in Malibu. Dollar for dollar, I saved even with gas and felt like I had dealt with a real neighbor, and a sincere person. I'll never return to Malibu Hardware again. That big guy in the photo is the one who said it to me. What a creep he came across as and a jerk.
