Malibu Hardware and Masonry Supply Opens

The store has a nursery and sells masonry supplies, hardware, garden redwood, items to make planters, building materials, cement, drywall and "a little bit of lumber."

A new Malibu business quietly went into operation Monday morning at the corner of Cross Creek Road and Civic Center Way. Malibu Hardware and Masonry Supply, owned by Malibu resident Dave Anawalt, had a soft opening, and is expected to have a grand opening in the fall.

"We are selling a little hardware, nursery [items], garden redwood, things to make planters out of, building materials, cement, drywall, masonry [supplies] and 'a little bit of lumber.'"

Anawalt said selling masonry supplies is the initial focus because the previous tenant used the property as a masonry yard.

"Since the previous tenant sold a little bit of lumber, we'll sell a little bit of lumber," Anawalt said. "And if there's demand, we'll bring in more products. The community will dictate what products are required."

He said this would include expanding the lumber operation. Since Malibu Lumber closed in 2005, there has been a demand by many people in Malibu for a new lumber store to open. Among those residents is Dick Van Dyke, who told Malibu Patch the opening of "a nice hardware store" was .

Although Malibu has been without a lumber store for more than six years, it has had a hardware store during this time.  is located in the mall at the corner of Rambla Pacifico and Pacific Coast Highway.

Anawalt said he is excited about opening a store in the city where he lives.

"It's kind of a dream," he said. "I've been trying to get a facility here in Malibu ever since Malibu Lumber left."

Anawalt's family has been in the lumber retail business since 1923, when it opened Anawalt Lumber in West Los Angeles. He attempted to buy Malibu Lumber in 2005. After the city took over the property, Anawalt was one of the bidders to lease the site, but he lost out to a team of Richard Weintraub and Richard Sperber, which eventually opened the Malibu Lumber Yard mall. Anawalt also attempted to lease the nearby city property where Super Care Drugs is located.

The new store sits on a 44,000-square-foot site owned by the Adamson family. Anawalt declined to get into specifics on the lease, but he said he expects to be in business "for the foreseeable future."

"We want to be a part of the community and stay in the community for as long as possible," Anawalt said.

Malibu Hardware and Masonry Supply, located at 3730 Cross Creek Road, is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If there is demand for it, the store could eventually open on Sundays. The phone number is 310-456-2772.
