Westboro Baptist Church Plans Protests at Malibu Churches

Other protests by the fundamentalist anti-gay group are planned at Santa Monica High School and at the Academy Awards.

Westboro Baptist Church, a fundamentalist anti-gay group known for protesting military funerals, plans to picket three Malibu churches later this month, according to its website.

The pickets are planned for 8:45 to 11 a.m. Feb. 24, starting at Malibu Presbyterian Church, moving to Waveside Church and ending at Our Lady of Malibu Catholic Church.

The Kansas-based group, which is also planning protests Santa Monica High School and at the Academy Awards, says the protests are "to remind this nation that they need to worship the one true God instead of these vain movie stars" and "Hollywood freaks."

The group regularly plans protests but fails to show up. When the demonstrations are held, they often draw counter-protests.

An official from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Lost Hills/Malibu Station said the department is aware of the protest plans.

On its website, Westboro says it will "picket the Malibu Presbyterian Church which burned to ground by an angry God in the 2007 wildfires for their disobedience to His standards. Rather than acknowledge that this event occurred at the hands of an angry God and REPENT, on their website, they brag that this adversity brought 'passion, unity and determination.' Let's break that down now."

The group also took issue with Waveside Church's message that all are welcome, posting: "Does this mean they will welcome WBC members with their glorious picket signs of Gospel truth? Something tells me this is a lie and the only people welcome at Waveside are those that will tell each other is it is OK to sin their lives away."

The group plans to protest Our Lady of Malibu, describing the Catholic church as a "pedophile machine masquerading as a church."

Calls to all three churches were not immediately returned.

Helena,
This is an amazing idea. As a student at Pepperdine and a follower of Jesus I firmly believe LOVE is the only way. I propose Malibu and the Pepperdine community "loves their enemy and pray for those who persecute them." Let's pour love over them and ask God for healing and revelation over all! Thank you for proposing love. Perfect love casts out fear.

Hi Guys, I live in Wichita Kansas, and have had to deal with Fred Phelps and his family a few times.Helena is totally right!
They are a family of lawyers that have found a very easy way to get rich! They NEED to make you angry and act out do that they in turn sue you and win. That's all. If you know when they are coming, I would honestly do something totally special, like, have someone grilling hot dogs or them, or invite them into the church and treat them like guests. Don't yell back, because they are professionals at making you discusted and angry. Don't let them. Stay silent and smile and offer them drinks and kindness. It will drive them, mad, and since they truly have no Idea who Jesus is, or what it means to be a Christian, it will be a testimony to them, and drive them away, to find money from a law suit somewhere else. they are just bullies who CAN DO NOTHING BUT BARK! thats all they can do, because they are very well versed in the law, of the freedom of speech. That's it. God Bless, Good Luck!

May I suggest a third way? Don't show up to counter protest as some have suggested above. They have heard all the counter arguments before. Don't show up to give them "love" as others have suggested above. Love is not in their vocabulary and never will be. Sometimes the best action is the absence of action. No one shows up. Everyone stays home. Let them protest to an empty parking lot. The bewildered circus freak show will have no choice but to go home. And they will never come back.
J. Flo February 14, 2013 at 05:27 am
Exactly!
Took the words out of my typing. Ignore. Imagine - throw a rally and no one comes. Boring. They're fueled by attention. Don't give it to them.

Don't feed the trolls.
Deb Haugen February 14, 2013 at 12:02 pm
John....Great idea. Press and counter attacks fuel them. If we could only get the media to stay home and not give them any power. They are sad, sick, individuals and I feel so sorry for them. Something must have gone so wrong in their lives for them to have so much hate inside.
Katherine Row February 14, 2013 at 12:21 pm
How sad that these folks feel they must force their hatred and intolerance on others. Feeding the wolf only helps it grow in strength. Ignore it and it will go away to seek food elsewhere. I feel blessed to live in a community that embraces everyone regardless of how tall, wide, attractive, intelligent, impaired or intolerant they are. Let's lead by example.
Malibu Magoo February 14, 2013 at 12:41 pm
Obviously, there's a reason they show up in places like Malibu and the Academies. They know the press will follow. Anyone who shows up to confront or counter-protest or whatever is just feeding their publicity machine (and potentially their litigation coffers). And DEFINITELY keep our City Council members waaaay clear of this circus. That mix will not end well.
Colin Horowitz February 14, 2013 at 01:11 pm
Essential to ignore them completely which then creates a non event for media coverage.
liz February 14, 2013 at 01:13 pm
thank you for your wisdom helena, its good to know others feel the same way too.
Ilan February 14, 2013 at 01:53 pm
Hahaha what a joke
kevin February 14, 2013 at 04:44 pm
Make sure the reason your car breaks down is because you can't shut the horn off. You want to shut these "folks" down? What has worked very well in the past is for the community to turn out and turn them back! Scare them off. So, what time do we meet and where?
WandaWoman February 14, 2013 at 04:59 pm
The counter protest is to be peaceful. As far as reasoning with these people, they are mentally ill, they need meds & intervention. Religious delusions and religious mania are part of schizophrenia. No love, and all the olive branches in the world is going to diffuse their hate.

Di February 14, 2013 at 05:56 pm
That's what I was thinking also when I first started reading this article and all the replies. I appreciate those who want to "show the love", but these guys are deaf. They cannot be re-educated at an "event" such as the one they're planning. I LOVE the idea of gay couples makin' out right in front of them, but that's the little kid in me. I also love the idea of blocking in their cars so they can't get anywhere! But really, the best is what John Z. Shafai suggested. Remember the slogan from the 60s??? "What if they gave a war and nobody came?" Boycott their boycott!! MALIBU STRONG!!
Eric E February 14, 2013 at 06:12 pm
I have an idea. if you read this story and are sad or angry, counter their acts of hatred, with an act of kindness towards someone who will appreciate it. A flower, a nice meal or a smile. If you can direct that kindness at any one of the groups that they direct their hatred toward, that much better. Kindness always wins out at the end.
Di February 14, 2013 at 06:15 pm
Yes Colin!!
Di February 14, 2013 at 06:19 pm
Eric...you gave me an idea. You know what would drive them crazy? If, for every one of them...and for every protest sign they raise...we could each donate a dollar (or more) to a legitimate Gay Rights organization. Then THANK THEM for helping to raise so much money for Gay Rights! Good burn!
Robert Feigel February 14, 2013 at 07:24 pm
I agree with those who recommend ignoring these inbred hicks and deny them the attention they so desperately seek.
Years ago I - when I was the New Zealand correspondent for NBC News - I covered a Royal visit off Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to Auckland. To be honest, the only reason they wanted me there is if someone was shot. There were hundreds, if not thousands of enthusiastic, cheering people around the Aotea Square in Auckland as the royal couple cruised along a well defined route to meet and greet the VIPs. I was right in the middle of the action with a group of media when my colleagues suddenly bolted away towards Queen Street. Curious about what they were running towards I followed at a more sedate pace and caught up with them. Cameras and microphones were all focused on a group of about six or eight slovenly protesters who were yelling and waving signs demanding to talk to the Sovereign about Maori grievances. Even more curious, I asked one of the reporters I knew why the local media were giving these few malcontents front page treatment while totally ignoring the many hundreds of the other people who were there to celebrate the Royal visit. And he said, "Because they're making the loudest noise," adding "But it would be much be much better if someone was yelling back at them." The media thrive on conflict. Don't give them anything to report. The real media focus will be on the Academy Awards' protest.

The WBC visit to Malibu Pres. coincides well with our Sunday services at 9:30 am and 11:11 am. All are welcome.
The new Sanctuary, built with the 'passion, unity and determination' of the congregation, reflects our desire to love, praise, and worship God.

This is what they did in Virginia and it worked. They had a fundraiser that supported the local Jewish and gay community associations. http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2010/08/turning-westboro-church-hate-charity-video-pennies-protest-virginia-god-fags for every hour the WBC remained in their town.
Win - Win. It drove them out pretty quick though. This is a much better solution than having someone slash their tires and then making sure the tow truck companies and repair shops in the area refuse to service them. right? We could all dress as Nazi's with Hitler moustaches and write hateful signs and join them in the protest. Guilt by association. There are plenty of costumes like that in LA studios. We could make white angel costumes 7 feet high, with 8-foot wingspans and surrounded the Westboro protesters so no one could see them. The group is called "Angels of Peace" and "Action Angels" if you want to look them up to learn more. Westboro Baptist Cult likes attention.

Niles Akbar February 17, 2013 at 07:33 pm
Boy do I disagree with you. Evil needs to be confronted and condemned. These are the same people as the KKK, only they have substituted the word "Fag" for the word "Ni**er." They are vile and represent the lowest level of social scum. As a Southerner I am horrified by their message and their presence in our town. They hide behind first amendment protection while they slander our service members and our town. THEY ARE THE KLAN, PERIOD. To say that those that oppose these jerks are the same is high-minded idiocy.
M Stanley February 19, 2013 at 03:05 pm
WBC isn't showing up to many of their "planned protests" lately, matter of fact the very members that were responsible for the PR and scheduling have defected and managed to find freedom from the oppressive hatred that they were forced into as children. The granddaughters of the fool himself have 'left the church'! IF there are to be counter protests consider raising these young ladies' names to prominence and rub it in the faces of the idiots that publicly declared their own flesh and blood is going to Hell for daring to veer from the grasp of Phelps' troubled mindset. http://www.kansascity.com/2013/02/06/4052727/two-members-leave-westboro-church.html

I doubt it matters much. The Malibu mayor is no more than the presiding officer of the councilRead More meetings. In a council-manager form of government, which Malibu has, the mayor has very little power--a good thing in Malibu considering its history. The mayor in Malibu is a ceremonial position and s/he has no more actual power than the other council members. The game of musical chairs is not a bad thing in the Malibu council. Consider the alternative!
Snookie Ravioli June 17, 2013 at 08:44 am
A follow-up to Tom Brady's idea of annelected mayor. That woukd require a change in the form ofRead More government in Malibu to a Mayor-Manager form. The Mayor-Manager form is best for larger cities. Most cities the size of Malibu have the Council-Manager form because experience shows it works best for small cities. Having an elected mayor with the power of an elected mayor could create more problems than it solves. It would completely change the political environent in Malibu, and not for the better. Having weak, rotating mayors serves Malibu well.
Dee Rivellino June 17, 2013 at 06:07 pm
How do I explain why we have such a turnover in Mayors.? Because in intelligent communities theRead More answer would sound very pathetic. ..Well, let me start from the beginning when no one on the first, second, third, fourth, etc. Councils could decide how long the Mayor should serve ..so some genius came up with rotation and actually that's ok because all the Mayor does anyway is pose for pictures with the current flock of so called Celebrities. This goes on the list of why Malibu is always so different from other normal town around us.(An article I wrote months ago in the Surfside news) The Council meets, accomplishes little, a new Mayor is selected and life goes on. ... Elected officials(that's a joke too since only less than 3,000 people ever show up to vote out of 13,000 residents).. You can't ask questions like why our Mayor moves like the waves of the Ocean when most of the people in Malibu have no clue whats going on behind those thick doors at City Hall....the ones NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Good for Burt, its only taken him 18 months to ask the hard questions.

Sounds like a great father, like his son. My father died in 1989, of cancer, but was a happy,Read More positive man to the end. My mother remarried nine years later, and remarked before she died at age 98 that she was blessed to be married to two wonderful men.
Max June 12, 2013 at 01:46 am
Dear Burt, A very toughing piece about your dear father. If only more fathers these days had theRead More values and character that your father had, this world would be a much better, more caring and loving place. I, too, had a father that was very giving and supportive of me. As both of my parents were holocaust survivors, my upbringing was greatly influenced by their horrific experiences in Poland, Czechoslovakia and Germany: losing 80% of our families, being in over a dozen different concentration camps and facing death and torture continuously. It’s amazing that they were able to lead “normal” lives upon immigrating to the US. Never finishing high school in Poland and not speaking a word of English, he attended night school (Fairfax High), worked during the days in the subcontractor business (he manufactured venetian blinds, screens and louver windows, all from scratch, decades before they were imported), became a citizen (as did my late Mom) and raised a family. They eked out a living (lower middle class), sent my younger brother and I to Hebrew school every day after public school classes, encouraged us to strive in school and somehow supported my hobby of being a radio amateur and my brother in violin studies. My parents always wanted me to become an electronics engineer (probably based on the dream my father had before WW2). Several of his proudest moments were when I got accepted into the physics grad schools of Princeton, Harvard, Caltech, Stanford and UCLA; when I received my PhD from Caltech; when I authored a cover feature article in Scientific American; and when I married my Beshert (soul mate). As a kid, I had a mild connection to you, Burt. I loved rulers, be they the fancy compact metallic ones that retracted by the push of a button, the ones that had a mechanical crank to reel in the ruler or the foldable wooden rulers (that I always associated with a magic trick), which I would use in school, the lab and measuring Ham radio antennas that I built as a kid. All this was influenced by my dear father, equipped with rulers of all kinds, which he used on a daily basis when precisely measuring windows and door frames, manufacturing venetian blinds, screen doors, etc. As a 5-year old, my father would take me to his 2-man shop and, as they worked, I would run around the place with various rulers and magnets in tow, measuring everything in sight and picking up nails and hardware. I guess the only difference between us is that you became a ruler and I became one who is ruled. Happy Father’s Day, Burt!
