Malibu High School boys soccer will play under the lights Friday against the Fillmore Flashes.
The junior varsity team will start off play at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 followed by a varsity game at 7 p.m., according to the MHS website. Sunset will occur at 5:05 p.m.
The varsity team goes into the game with five wins, zero losses and one tie.
"It's fantastic to have our athletes play at a time when their parents nad the community can see them play. It's never been available until now," said Pete Anthony, a MHS parent who is on the “Bring on the Lights” campaign's steering committee.
An In-N-Out cookout trailer will be on hand to sell hamburgers for $5, cheeseburgers for $6 and a double-double for $7. Snacks and other beverages will also be sold on the field.
The 70-foot athletic lights were installed in October amid a lawsuit filed by the Malibu Community Alliance, seeking an injunction to prevent or limit the use of the lights.
In November, a judge denied a preliminary injunction seeking to limit the lights, clearing the way for a special homecoming game celebration and the JV and varsity soccer season.
The lawsuit challenges the Malibu City Council's approval of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District application for a permit to install and use 70-foot lights on the field with limitations.
