On
Friday, November 22, fifty years to the day following the tragic assassination
of President John F. Kennedy, Pepperdine University Libraries and the School of
Public Policy will host a screening of “John F. Kennedy:  Years of Lightning, Day of Drums,” with
director Bruce Herschensohn.  The
90-minute filmed memorial tribute is narrated by Gregory Peck and was produced
by the United States Information Agency, and features extensive excerpts from
Kennedy’s speeches, including color footage of his swearing in and inaugural
address.

Dean
of Libraries Mark Roosa comments, “Bruce Herschensohn’s remarkable talents
enabled him to not only write and direct the film, but also compose the
music.  It remains a landmark
achievement and indelible record of President Kennedy.”  “Years of Lightning, Day of Drums” was
the only authorized documentary about President Kennedy produced by the United
States Information Agency, which produced media about America for foreign
distribution.  Following a special
act of Congress in 1965, it was released in America for viewing by domestic
audiences.

Bruce
Herschensohn is a political commentator, author and senior fellow at the
Pepperdine University School of Public Policy in Malibu, California.  He served in the Nixon and Reagan
administrations and is the author of nine books, in addition to being a filmmaker and producer.  The Bruce Herschensohn Collection is part of Pepperdine
University Libraries’ Special Collections, and pieces from the collection
documenting the making of the film are on display in Payson Library.
The
event is free and open to the public.
