Hala Auji: “Of Grammars and Bibles: Protestant Publications in a Multi-confessional Ottoman Society”

Scholar Hala Auji will examine the history of Arabic language Bibles and the intersection of the Islamic faith with Biblical literature in the Middle East.  This lecture is part of a series of talks which support the “Muslim Journeys Bookshelf,” a grant awarded to Pepperdine University Libraries by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.   Librarian Sally Bryant directs the project, and the lead scholar is Dr. David Simonowitz.  The Muslim Journeys Bookshelf, a group of books and DVDs that explore the Muslim experience, is available at Payson Library. 

Hala Auji is a specialist in Islamic and Middle Eastern visual culture, design and the built environment. She recently completed her doctoral work in art history at Binghamton University, State University of New York, and also holds an MA in Criticism & Theory from Art Center College of Design and a BFA in graphic design from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.

She has taught undergraduate courses on non-western art, architecture and material culture that encompass a globally comparative and interdisciplinary approach. Auji has presented her work at the annual IFA-Frick Symposium on the History of Art, the annual conference of the American Printing History Association, and the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association. Her research has been supported with a travel grant from the American Printing History Association, a Grabar Travel Award from the Historians of Islamic Art Association, and various awards and fellowships from Binghamton University.
