Pepperdine Libraries Unveils Hollywood Visionaries and Beyond Exhibit Featuring Photography of Leigh Wiener
Tuesday, October 1
5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Payson Library Gallery
As
part of its Fall 2013 series Hollywood Visionaries and Beyond,
Pepperdine University will host an exhibit of photography and
memorabilia from the golden age of Hollywood in Payson Library from
October 1 through December 20, 2013. The event is made possible through
the generous support of the Brenden Mann Foundation, celebrating the
legacy of Hollywood producer and theater magnate Ted Mann. The exhibit
and accompanying film screenings and panel discussions are free and open
to the public.
The exhibit opens with a reception
on October 1, from 5 pm to 6:30 pm. The reception will feature remarks
from Devik Wiener, son of legendary Hollywood photographer Leigh
Wiener. The Payson exhibit will feature select photos from Leigh
Wiener’s career, focusing on the studio heads and actors whose films
will be highlighted in the series.

During his
50-year career, Wiener photographed Hollywood studio moguls and legends
alike and his work is now housed in the permanent collections of the
National Portrait Gallery and several national museums. Wiener went on
to become a staff photographer at the Los Angeles Times and was a
freelance photographer for Life, Time, and others. Additional
photography spotlights iconic movie palaces including the Broadway
Theater and the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles, which were
owned by the Corwin family. The Corwin family has owned Metropolitan
Theatres since the Broadway Theater opened in downtown Los Angeles
during the 1920’s.
“We hope our Visionaries series
will challenge stereotypes and open doors to discussions of faith and
identity,” said Mark Roosa, dean of Pepperdine University Libraries.
“Framed by popular portrayals in media and film, we will explore the
place of Jews in American life, the relation between Jews and secular
society, and Jewish-Christian relations.”
In addition to the Payson
Library exhibit, the Visionaries series also includes the following
public film screenings and panel discussions:
American Dreams and the Big Screen: Projections of Jewish Faith, Ethnicity and Culture Through the Generations.

Women in Hollywood: 100 Years of Negotiating the System
November 15 and 16
Pepperdine University Malibu Campus
A two-day symposium cosponsored by the Straus Institute for Dispute
Resolution at the School of Law and the Center for Entertainment, Media
and Culture, will take place Friday to Saturday, Nov. 15 to 16, on the
Malibu Campus. Featured speakers include Hunger Games producer Nina
Jacobson, Lean In co-author Nell Scovell, and Twilight series
screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg. An evening reception, "Lean In: Honoring
the Next Wave of Hollywood Women Leaders," held at the Malibu Jewish
Center and Synagogue will conclude the symposium.
"Women in
creative, business, and legal roles still face a scarcity of
opportunities in entertainment," said professor Thomas J. Stipanowich,
academic director of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at
Pepperdine University School of Law. "We hope this event will help
advance the discussion on how to manage conflicts and relationships,
both personal and professional, in order to successfully negotiate the
system."
