Blog: Surfers, Exiting Gracefully

Fireball Tim captures what all surfers do: crash.

We’ve had some big swells this summer here in the Bu. Wild stuff. And frequently when I’m not in the water, I like to shoot surfers doing what they do and this includes my wife. But in the last few weeks, as I was shooting with my nifty SONY A77, I came upon a pondering. As I looked out across the sand, there were other guys with cameras shooting the same thing I was! THIS CAN’T BE! Slightly different angles, but all looking for the same “hero shots.” Like, that had to change…

So I asked myself, “What can I shoot that would be different?” And suddenly, like a burnt brick to the noggen… it came to me.

Everyone has to kick out, right? But not everyone does it gracefully. So… my mission began to shoot the Best of the Exit. And I was dumbfounded as to how many there were! I mean flabbergated! Undulated! Fartfegnuted! Each dood had his own style of getting out of the wave and that meant lots of shots. We all know (if you surf), how to kick out of a wave. But that’s the controlled way. So snooze. THIS, was a bit more challenging. And I had to capture the “instant moment.”

Sure, I got a lot of other cool shots that should be in SURFER MAGAZINE. But, these were the golden nuggets of the day. And that brings me to this. Since I’m going to be the King of the Capture when it comes to exiting a wave, if you see me on the beach, be ready. I will shoot you in the moment of your contortion. Just sayin.’ And then… it’s to the Malibu Patch and THE WORLD!

This could be good…
