A fundraiser scheduled for Saturday hopes to replace thousands of dollars’ worth of weightlifting equipment stolen from Malibu High School over spring break.

“Locks had been cut and equipment had been hauled away,” said Dusty Breeding, a youth minister at the University Church of Christ at Pepperdine who volunteers with the strength and conditioning program at Malibu High.

Reported stolen on April 30, according to a police blotter in the Malibu Times, were:

  • Four “plyo boxes” ($742)
  • Four 45-pound plates ($548)
  • Four 35-pound plates ($346)
  • Six 10-pound plates ($270)
  • “Straight V” dip machine ($395)
  • Two 50-pound kettle balls ($109)
  • Two 40-pound kettle balls ($86)
  • Two 30-pound kettle balls ($64)
  • Two 20-pound kettle balls ($44)
  • One weight bench ($408)

Breeding, who personally trains at CrossFit Malibu, came up with the idea for the fundraiser to replace the lost equipment – appropriately called “Raise the Weights” – which will feature a “fun, gauntlet style workout,” he said.

Participants donate $20 to “play’ and are encouraged to seek further donations to go directly toward The Shark Fund, the fundraising umbrella for Malibu Middle and High schools, said Doug Masterson, chairman of the Shark Fund.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at CrossFit Malibu, 3728 Cross Creek Road. The first heat begins at 9 a.m., and the last heat will begin at 11 a.m.

“All proceeds will go to replace what was lost,” Masterson said. “Please make your tax-deductible donations payable to The Shark Fund. Help us reach our fundraising goal of $5000.”
