Sitting Ducks on PCH

Crossing the highway in Malibu can be done safely without changing the speed limit, installing crosswalks or restricting parking. I have a set of rules that I never break

1) Never cross until traffic is clear in both directions.
2) If you feel you might have to run or stop in the middle, don't do it!
3) Don't cross when cars slow down for you. People not paying attention will use the middle of the highway to avoid an accident. If you do make it safely into the middle, congrats! you are now a "sitting duck". Now you can enjoy the rush of cars going 50MPH on both sides of you.
4) Stay back behind the fog line and don't make eye contact with drivers of oncoming cars. They might slam on their brakes. (see rule 3)
5) If traffic is slow moving or stopped, watch out for motorcycles lane splitting between cars or impatient motorists illegally flying down the middle in the emergency lane.
6) Watch out for motorists doing "whatever" in the center. They are usually looking for an address, doing U-turns or merging…and you are not on their radar.
7) If you drop something, don't try to save it (unless it's a baby)
8) Take cheesy shoes, sandals or high heels off first. If you are a tenderfoot, stand on your towel. The highway gets hot! …clowns should tie their shoelaces.
9) If you have children, hold their hands!
10) Expect the unexpected. Cars can come from thin air, as well as bicycles.
11) Be patient! I have had to wait 10 minutes! it seemed like forever, but dead is forever!
12) Don't cross if you are wasted! I have lived on the highway for 15 years. I cross regularly with 3 children.

…crossing the highway is analogous to jumping out of an airplane, soaring off a cliff on your snowboard, getting barreled on a sandy closeout or getting married. It should be treated as a decision that could have major consequences!
