Inside Malibu's Geometric Looking Glass Home

The first in a series of columns about unique homes in Malibu.

Perched in the hills above Malibu, this geometric home resembles a looking glass with views overlooking Broad Beach, Zuma Beach and Point Dume.

Local artist and architect Edward A. D’Andrea began work on the western Malibu home in 1991. According to D’Andrea’s website, he designed this geometric looking glass house to balance the alignment of the sun, the 240 degree views and the house on the adjacent front lot. When he designed this home, he considered the altitude of the site, and the downward view towards the ocean. He sloped the glass toward the beach, which keeps it from direct exposure from the sun and eliminates glare.

This property is a three level architectural masterpiece with a spacious and flexible floor plan.  According to D’Andrea, “The central spiral stairs ties all the levels together with a ballet of movement for both the people and the light as the day progresses.“  Additional architectural information can be viewed online.

This two-bedroom, three-bath home features a custom kitchen with granite counters, custom maple cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. The walls of glass create a home that is light and bright. This home features a private contemporary environment, which compliments an indoor/outdoor Malibu lifestyle. D’Andrea describes Malibu as a “very special and rarified place where privacy is the most important commodity.”

Nothing is compartmentalized away, which makes this home unique to Malibu.
