A Toast to My CrossFit Anniversary

After a year of exercising at CrossFit Malibu, I have become stronger, fitter and 40 pounds lighter.

Today is my anniversary. Not my wedding anniversary, not my first date anniversary, not my living in California anniversary.  Today is my  anniversary. On June 15, 2010, I went to CrossFit for the first time. One year later I am stronger, fitter and 40 pounds lighter.

In the past year at CrossFit, I have done things I never thought I could do.  On any given day, we do pull-ups, dead lifts, squats, push-ups, lunges, run sprints, and the list goes on.  Every day, there is a different WOD (Workout of the Day), so it is never boring and it's always challenging. Although CrossFit is not for the faint of heart, Mike Anderson, owner of CrossFit, always finds a way to scale the workout so everyone can do it. So it doesn't matter if you are a PTA mom, a student or a professional athlete, because the workout can be scaled so all of these people can be in a class together doing the WOD.

The workouts can be brutal and are usually exhausting, but it is fun and always incredibly satisfying when it is over. Afterward, we record our workout in a journal so we can track our progress. We are always trying to beat our past times, increase the number of repetitions and best our PR (personal record).

In the past, I never liked exercising with other people, so I always did it on my own. But at CrossFit I have met a great group of people who are supportive and competitive at the same time. I feel very lucky to have joined the Peace, Love and Power class at 9 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, which on any given day consists of Malibu moms, college professors, masseuses, actors, college students, yoga teachers and firefighters. We enjoy each other's company, even as we are suffering through pull-ups or running on Civic Center Way.

So today, I will celebrate my anniversary by going to my 9 a.m. class and maybe toasting with a glass of champagne afterward. I am grateful for the mental and physical strength I have gained over the past year and I will continue to enjoy being part of the Peace, Love and Power class. CrossFit has been a great addition to my Malibu life and I am so proud to be part of the CrossFit community.
