Richard and Shawn Sperber heard the Lagoon and answered by offering their home to host a Gala Fundraiser on Saturday, March 10th to help raise funds for the Appeal filed by Wetlands Defense Fund, Access for All, and CLEAN.
Others heard the Lagoon, too, including co-hosts Matt & Jill Rapf, Pamela Conley Ulich, and one of the founding members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, vocalist Anthony Kiedis.
Lots of surfers heard the Lagoon loud and clear, and came to support the event - including hopeful City candidates and surfers Andy Lyon, Hamish Patterson and Skylar Peak.
Candidates Joan House and Missy Zeitsoff also attended, along with many Malibu residents, and families.
It was a perfect spot for this event, surrounded by nature, the laughter of children, good food, good music, good art, and lots of people. Residents talked about saving the Lagoon from the proposed project slated for June, but were more importantly, doing something about it.
Even the Sperber children and their friends did something, selling homemade cupcakes & lemonade, and contributing the $197.50 made from the those sales.
Anthony Kiedis “walked his talk”, not only by co-hosting the event and contributing to the silent auction, but by his love for nature, evident in his interview with Mr. Malibu.
Kiedis passionately talks about the Lagoon not being a toxic waste dump but vibrant and alive, filled with amazing animals. He pointed out that the toxicity comes from up there – a sewer plant at the top of that mountain – and feels that maybe the mark was missed with the current solution.
Instead, Kiedis thinks that the focus needs redirection on how to deal with the sewage rather then gutting a natural wetland where animals and birds live – including endangered species.
The pelicans seem to know something is going on, as they are starting their incessant flights up and down the coast. Maybe they hear the Lagoon calling out for help.
