How Safe Do You Feel?

There are many things you can do to avoid being the victim of an attacker.

Studies show most physical attacks are not done by highly trained fighters. With that taken into account, the best way to avoid being the victim of an attacker is not through physical action, but rather through common self-defense. Somebody who is not a fighter by nature cannot learn to fight, but the person can learn common-sense self-defense.

In trying to avoid an attack, there are some things to keep in mind. One is to always avoid a hostile or potentially hostile situation before it escalates. Another is to remain alert and aware, especially when you are in a vulnerable situation. Criminals look for victims who are not alert or aware.

At night, avoid sidewalks with alleys and doorways, and refrain from cellphone conversations.

Try to have your back to a wall at all times, and never turn your back to an attacker. That is when you become most vulnerable. When facing an attacker, keep eye contact at all times. Remember to breathe, and state loudly and boldly, "Leave me alone."

Another thing to keep in mind is that when facing a potential attacker, this is not the time to test your verbal attack skills. Do not insult, aggravate or challenge an attacker. There is no need to egg the person on. This increases the chance of a dangerous situation.
