Nothing Like a Good Pie

The Malibu United Methodist Church Pie Festival is set for this Saturday. The good news is you don't have to be a Methodist to bake a pie or more importantly, from my perspective, to eat one.

Friends think I moved to Malibu because of the weather, natural beauty and proximity to my kids, but what they don’t know is the Malibu United Methodist Church Pie Festival was the primary motivating factor.

You might think I am exaggerating, but let’s face it, there is nothing like a good pie, and there will be plenty of them this Saturday, Oct. 13 at the church grounds.

The Methodists of Malibu figured out 23 years ago that appealing to the Malibu collective sweet tooth was a pretty good way of raising funds, and they have been doing it ever since. The good news is you don’t have to be a Methodist to bake a pie or more importantly, from my perspective, to eat one.

There will be no lack of variety, and I am already conflicted between apple, blueberry and lemon meringue. Of course, I could go completely decadent and surrender to peanut butter pie.

Somebody way back started to call the festival “A Festival of Fun and Good Taste” and the name has stuck, I guess because it so aptly describes what the day is all about. If there is one day a year to forget about your impending diabetes and indulge, this Saturday would be it.

As a Jew, frankly I don’t know much about the Methodists, but what I know so far I like. They serve chocolate candy when you vote at their polling place, and they sure know how to put on a pie festival. If I were ever going to change religions, I think I would consider joining the Methodist clan.
