Two Years Later: The Malibu Lagoon Restoration and Enhancement Project

Malibu's Man-Made Lagoon: State Parks to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration for what they claim is a success in the restoration of Malibu Lagoon. But is it?

Almost two years to date, my opinion letter ran in Malibu Times titled, "Another Endangered Species: The Perfect Wave - Local Surfers at Odds with Heal the Bay and Surfrider Foundation!"  Protest had already been getting pretty heated on the corner of Cross Creek and PCH.  So much so that the controversial project made national news.  Even though thousands signed a petition asking Jerry Brown to stop the project and several environmental groups sued State Parks , the project moved forward.

On May 3rd, State Parks will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony and celebrate what they claim is a success.  But is it?  These photos were taken this past Saturday, April 20th. This was the first time I used the new path to walk to the beach from the lagoon’s parking lot since State Parks had started the project.  Unfortunately, what I soon discovered is that there is nothing natural about this once protected natural wetland.
