Protecting What You Care For Most: Part I - Basic Key Entry

Protecting your loved ones, employees, physical assets and intellectual property of your home or facility has become more difficult over the past few years

Security Quiz: The basis of any home or facility security begins with keys, key control and key duplication. Unauthorized use and copying of keys can weaken your security efforts. Is your home/facility secure? The quiz below may help you identify some potential problems.

  • How many keys have been issued? Do you know how many keys have been produced and how many copies have been made?
  • Who are the key holders? Current employees or those who have left or been terminated; household staff and others who have been given use of the key.
  • Can your keys be copied? Most keys can be copied at any hardware store, even if "Do Not Duplicate" is stamped on them. "Do Not Duplicate" means nothing and there is no legal backing to the threat. Stamping a key with this is ineffective, and in fact that marking is an indicator that it is an important key to others.
  • How susceptible are your locks to physical attacks? Many over-the-counter locks have been protected against "bumping" or "picking." But a common cordless drill can defeat a lock in seconds with very little noise or problems.
  • Have you experienced physical harm or loss of property?  Entry into restricted areas, your privacy, files and valuables should be given consideration.

  • List your 5 most valuable physical assets; i.e. inventory, personal possessions, electronics, etc.
  • List your 5 most valuable intellectual properties; i.e. financial information, personal/client records, medical and legal documents, correspondence, etc.

Did You Know?

  • Most keys can be duplicated easily. Copying keys is done quickly at any hardware store, and with many locations available, it can be done in a timely manner while the keys are briefly out of your possession or control.
  • More than 30 percent of theft and burglaries are accomplished with a duplicate key. Only patent-protected keys made by a manufacturer and their dealers can achieve the desired level of control for where you live or where you work.
  • Standard locks and deadbolts can be easily drilled or forced open with little training or instruction

In Part II, we'll look at what elements make a good keying system, the advantages vs. disadvantages of different systems and how to evaluate what is right for you.
