Malibu Water Polo goes to the Junior Olympics

For the first time in Malibu history, a team of boy’s water polo players make it through JO Qualifying and are off to the Junior Olympics next month representing the city of Malibu and the Malibu Water Polo Foundation.

Coach Hayden Goldberg and his team of talented and committed athletes started their journey last December with the end goal of playing in the Junior Olympics. Through the winter, the team played in the VCL League where they took 1st place in the final tournament as well as finishing third at Winterfest 2013. This is a great team of Malibu High School players (16 years old and under) that have stayed together and focused on playing in the JO’s. Entering the JO qualifying tournament they were seeded 20th out of 27 teams. After playing Rose Bowl, LAWP, Buena, Cerritos and Commerce they found themselves in the final game against South Bay Peninsula. The team that won this game would secure the last spot open to go to the Junior Olympics. It was a tension filled historical game for the SHARKS from Malibu and they seized the moment. Their crushing defense was the difference and they won the game sending them further on their journey next month to the JO’s.

Coach Goldberg knows his players extremely well, as he has coached them from when they started playing in Malibu Youth Water Polo. In turn, his players know what he expects from them, especially the “We Not Me” attitude that is the mantra of Malibu High Water Polo headed up by longtime Head Coach Mike Mulligan.
