Firefighters Quickly Put Out Brush Fire

A helicopter aids in the firefighting near Mulholland Highway above Malibu.

Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department put out a small brush fire near Mulholland Highway, west of Kanan Road, near Malibu Sunday evening.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lost Hills Station got a call about the blaze at around 5:25 p.m., Lt. Robert Wiard, the watch commander on duty at the station, said. No details about the fire were immediately available.

"It was pretty quick," Wiard said, referring to the firefighting response. The fire was limited to an area probably 20 feet by 20 feet, and traffic is flowing in the area, he added.

At least one helicopter aided the firefighting, according to nearby residents.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

All kinds of shenanigans going on. There was also a campfire at the foot of the Escondido Falls. They left the charred wood. Mountains Conservancy is not taking care of their business.

During any red flag alerts it is vitally important that we as the citizens of Malibu keep our eyes open and report any drivers that do throw out lit cigarettes from their cars.

I walk up Sweetwater Mesa every morning where there is always some sort of construction. I often find cigarettes that have been thrown out of a truck or car while lit. It would be really smart if job foremen would demand the utmost caution regarding smoking while driving and working in our canyons.

You are right about construction workers. Whenever I hire a contractor I always tell them there is no smoking allowed in the canyon. Then later I see one of the workers standing right next to the propane tank smoking. Visitors really don't appreciate the fire risks and we need to remind anyone smoking in Malibu of the dangers.

I live on Busch. I arrived home from work the other night to have a red car speed past me and throw a cigarette out the window! It was still lit and being tossed around by the wind. I had to go over and put it out. Careless. Inconsiderate. Slobs.
