Cross-County Pursuit Ends in Malibu

Reaching up to speeds of 80 mph, CHP officers performed a PIT maneuver to stop the chase. The suspects are foreign exchange students at UC Irvine.

A male driver was arrested tonight after a 40-minute chase from East Los Angeles to Malibu.

The driver of a white BMW 750i came to the attention of officers on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway near South Indiana Street around 8:35 p.m. for speeding and weaving, California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Rubio said.

The chase proceeded westbound on Santa Monica (10) Freeway and then northbound on Pacific Coast Highway. Speeds ranged from 25-80 mph, Rubio said.

A CHP officer performed a PIT maneuver on Pacific Coast Highway, just south of Lunita Road, around 9:15 p.m., prompting the driver to throw the car's keys out the driver's side window.

The suspect was taken into custody, along with two passengers in the vehicle, Rubio said.

The three suspects are foreign exchange students at UC Irvine, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Elizabeth Van Valkenburgh told a videographer at the scene.
