Woman, Lifeguards Rescued on Cliffs Near Westward Beach Road

A woman and two lifeguards were rescued Saturday afternoon after getting trapped 50 feet down a cliff near 7200 Westward Beach Rd. near Point Dume, according to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Department.

Members of the Malibu Search and Rescue Team were called to the scene, along with members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The woman was not injured, according to Lt. Josh Thai of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Department.

"Two lifeguards had climbed up to assist the female climber that was stranded in a bathing suit and no shoes," Reserve Sgt. David Katz of the Malibu Search and Rescue Team wrote in an email to Patch. "After the female was safely extracted by other climbers, Malibu SAR harnessed up and evacuated the two lifeguards. This operation is referred to as a rappelling cliffhanger that is conducted by a single SAR rescuer who rappels to the stranded person, puts them in a harness and then safely rappels the person down the cliff to the bottom."
