An apparent overnight car crash at Point Dume took out a power pole, and the emergency repair effort blacked out the western end of the beach town today.

Southern California Edison officials estimated that 2,039 customers were initially without electricity from Point Dume west into the Zuma, Trancas and County Line Beach areas.

Complete repair was expected by noon, said Edison spokesman Robert Villegas.

Although Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies did not get a call about a car crash, skid marks and freshly torn-up landscaping indicated a vehicle had been driven off westbound Pacific Coast Highway west of Cavalleri Road. Deputies were investigating the possible hit and run.

The crash left the pole hanging at an angle over PCH at sunrise, but electric service to western Malibu was not cut until workers began repairs at 8:45 a.m.

One westbound lane was closed at Point Dume.
