Malibu City Councilman Skylar Peak is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for his behavior at a local shopping center, according to published reports.
Peak faces charges of brandishing a weapon in a threatening manner, vandalism and erratic behavior, Cpt. Joe Stephens of the Lost Hills/Malibu Station told the Surfside News.
The incident occurred at the Point Dume Village shopping center at around 9:45 p.m. July 11, according to reports.
The Surfside News reports witnesses saw Peak running around the parking lot in a speedo swimsuit, screaming, knocking over shopping carts and had half pair of scissors he was using as a knife.
Security guards at the shopping center were concerned for the safety of everyone at the center, including their own, and called the Sheriff’s Department, according the Surfside News.
Peak was not booked by deputies, but was taken to a hospital for evaluation, Stephens said.
Peak told the newspaper he spent five days at the Del Amo Hospital in Torrance for a behavioral health evaluation.
“I was on a workout…running barefoot in a swimsuit and ran through the [parking lot],” Peak said in an interview with the Surfside News. “As I was running, I clipped my foot on a chair and cut it and yelled out.”
Peak said he plans on going to the Lost Hills/Malibu Sheriff's Station to press charges.
Malibu City Attorney Christi Hogin said Peak is presumed innocent until proven quilty.
"We have a duty to investigate complaints and we are carrying that out. He is going to be treated the same as anyone is treated," Hogin said.
