Public safety officials urged Southland residents today to leave fireworks to the pros and attend a public display on the Fourth of July.

In some cases, setting off fireworks in Los Angeles County be prosecuted as a felony, sheriff's Detective Enrique Velazquez of the explosives detail said at a multi-agency news conference.

"If you are caught, it can be a felony and you'll spend your Fourth of July behind bars," Velazquez said.

To demonstrate the danger, a professional detonated fireworks and exploded watermelons to demonstrate the potentially lethal power of fireworks.

"We've had fingers blown off, people damage their eyes, burns. It's very dangerous," he said.

In some Los Angeles County cities, safe and sane fireworks, such as sparklers, are permitted. But any fireworks that explode or fly are illegal. Those approved by the state fire marshal carry "Safe and Sane" labels.

I wish everyone would go to the parks or beaches. They have beautiful displays there. Last year my neighbourhood was like a war zone with all the illegal fireworks. They literally shook my house. A neighbours's tree caught on fire, another's attic caught fire, another's porch was scorched. All the poor animals are terrified and several traumatized dogs were running down the middle of the road. We could not catch them. Everything is so dry because of the drought so they are a fire hazard. Not to mention all the injuries that occur every year. Used to be it was just July4th but now they start weeks before and end weeks afterwards.

In the 91343 zip code illegal fireworks are rampant. For the past few weeks flying illegal fireworks can be spotted from my house. Why isn't law enforcement doing anything?
