Though Malibuites have always thought of fire as our number one disaster scenario, it appears as though we need to rethink this. Fact: the entire Pacific Rim has been very active of late and that does not bode well for us. There have recently been several small earthquakes near us, a sign we have growing seismic activity happening along our coast. We need to re-examine our disaster preparedness at home and work. A fire usually means - gather what you can and run far and fast. Where an earthquake means - shelter in place, if you can. Shelter in place requires at least 3 days of water, food and supplies for you, your family and your pets. http://www.earthquakecountry.info/roots/steps.html If you are near the shore: Drop, Cover, and Hold On until the shaking stops. If severe shaking lasts twenty seconds or more, immediately evacuate to high ground as a Tsunami might have been generated by the earthquake. Move inland two miles or to land that is at least 100 feet above sea level immediately. Don’t wait for officials to issue a warning. Walk quickly, rather than drive, to avoid traffic, debris and other hazards. My best advice - get informed, be prepared and stay calm.
