Two Injured 12-Year-Olds Rescued from Malibu Cliff

The girl was disoriented and suffering from heat exhaustion while the boy had hurt his ankle. They were out hiking with a larger party of children and adults from the Salvation Army camp in Calabasas.

Rescue workers came to the aid of two injured, preteen hikers above Tapia Park in Malibu today.

The Malibu Search and Rescue Team got the call at 9:40 this morning. Workers quickly determined that the 12-year-old girl form Ventura and the 12-year-old boy from Santa Maria would need to be airlifted off a cliff, according to Reserve Capt. David J. Katz.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department helicopter performed a winch rescue, "extracting the female who was disoriented, suffering from heat exhaustion," Katz said.

The two preteens were hiking with a larger party of children and adults from the Salvation Army camp in Calabasas.

While Air Rescue 5 headed to UCLA Trauma Center with the first patient, a helicopter from the Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived to retrieve the boy, who had suffered an ankle injury, Katz said.

Both hikers were taken to UCLA Trauma Center.

So far this year, the Malibu Search and Rescue Team has come to the aid of 71 people, Katz said.
