Caltrans Allocates $900K to PCH Bike Route Improvement Project in Malibu

Caltrans allocates $900,000 to the project, which will improve the existing bike route between Busch Drive and the western Malibu city limit.

Work on the Pacific Coast Highway Bike Route Improvement Project could begin as early as early December, according to a city official.

Caltrans allocated $900,000 this month to the project, which will improve the existing bike route and promote safety for all modes of transportation between Busch Drive and the western city limit, according to City Manager Jim Thorsen.

The project will go out to bid for 45 days, and then the Malibu City Council will select the winning bid, Thorsen said.

The total cost of the project is around $1 million.

Looks to me like the bike path is the street, with two riders side-by-side in a lane. Is this a street improvement project by another name?

I would be great if all Catrans started by cleaning the shoulders on friday, Saturday and Sunday so the riders wouldn't have to dodge glass and road kill.

Ms. Shark, The lane is for both cars and bikes. The white line is a fog line. When bikes are riding to the right of the fogline its because it's either as courtesy, is more safe, is most practicable, or because there's no visiblity in the lane (agains most safe). The right lane (left of the fogline) is no more for cars than for bicycles. There's no bias towrds one or the other. Most informed experienced cyclist ride either the lane or right of the fog line based on the surrounding conditions. Too often folks construe the fog line for a 'bike lane' when it's simply the shoulder of the road. The laws about cycling are with regards to the road to the left of the fogline. PCH is a designated bike route and bikes belong there with the same rights.... When you see fols on PCH in the lane, they are riding to the intent of the law. Please welcome them and protect them. Noel.

Noel, exactly, this is why I ask if this is a street improvement project, by another name. What does bike lane improvement entail when PCH IS the bike lane?
Noel September 26, 2013 at 06:32 PM
Ahhh, I wonder if....that it will be some paint to designate part of the shoulder as a functional bike line, some sharrows, and some re-engineering of the way things are laid out that currently lead to too many choke points and too much risk exposure. One can only hope....
