Malibu City Staff Recommend Chain Store Limiting Ordinance to Planning Commission

A full report is released 20 days before a public hearing on a proposed formula retail ordinance.

Malibu city staff have recommended that the Malibu Planning Commission give the green light to a proposed ordinance that would place limits on chain stores in the Civic Center.

The proposed formula retail ordinance will go before the Malibu Planning Commission at 6:30 p.m. July 29 at Malibu City Hall.

The ordinance aims to "protect, maintain and enhance the overall quality of the coastal zone environment," according to city officials.

Some 115 comments were received by the city in advance of the hearing.

An agenda report and other documents were released Tuesday, which is 20 days in advance of the hearing.

Malibu Senior Planner Joseph Smith said the early release was to give residents, business owners and others as much time as possible to review the documents. The documents are available for review at http://www.malibucity.org/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/270?html=true.

If the Malibu Planning Commission recommends the ordinance, it would next head to the Malibu City Council for an additional public hearing.

Malibu Patch will have more analysis on this issue soon.
