Traffic Delays Ahead While Workers Spruce Up Kanan Dume Tunnels

A press release from the county of Los Angeles Public Works Department:

Construction will begin in early June on a $2 million project to upgrade the interior lining and lighting systems of the Kanan Dume Road tunnels in Malibu.

The improvements are designed to increase driver visibility when traveling through the tunnels and enhance vehicle safety.

Work will take place Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. and continue for approximately eight months. Although one lane will be provided for each direction of travel, motorists should plan ahead for traffic delays during construction hours.

Upon completion of work on the Kanan Dume tunnels in January 2015, the Malibu Canyon Road tunnel will receive a similar $3 million upgrade. The tunnel will remain open to traffic from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the seven-month construction period, but will be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., on weekdays and weekends, at which time vehicles will be detoured onto Kanan Dume Road.

The repairs will be financed with funds from LA County and State 1B Transportation Bond revenue. For construction updates and further information, visit the County Public Works web site at www.dpw.lacounty.gov/go/malibutunnel.
