Volunteers Needed to Pull Weeds Near Springs Fire Burn Area

Jointed goat grass is a highly invasive weed that occurs only in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Twenty-five volunteers are needed to hand-pull an invasive weed next to the burn area at Rancho Sierra Vista in the western Santa Monica Mountains.
The weed removal is set for 9 a.m to noon Saturday, May 18.
"We're concerned that it will quickly spread to the burn area and we need your help to stop it in its tracks," said Kate Kuykendall, Public Affairs Officer for the
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
Jointed goat grass (also known as aegilops cylindrica) is a highly invasive weed that occurs only in the Santa Monica Mountains, Kuykendall said.
Volunteers are asked to RSVP by emailing kate_kuykendall@nps.gov and should bring water, sunscreen, hat, and work gloves. They are also asked to wear long sleeves and long pants and closed-toe shoes.
The Springs Fire burned 24,000 acres, mostly in the Santa Monica Mountains and threatened the city of Malibu.
