Sunday Malibu Lagoon Bird Walks February 26

On Sunday, February 26, Santa Monica Bay Audubon Society leads two bird walks at Malibu Lagoon.
Adult walk: 8:30am.
Children & Parents walk: 10am.

Rain or shine, holiday or not, we've done these trips on the 4th Sunday of every month for over 30 years.  We've just never announced them in the Malibu Patch before.  So if you live in the Malibu area, come down and meet some of your feathered fellow Malibuites.  We're here until about 11am, but you can leave any time you like.

There will probably be more birds than you can shake a stick at.  Birds you’ve never even heard of!  Marbled Godwit, Ruddy Turnstone, Whimbrel, Heermann’s Gull, Pelagic Cormorant, Western Roof Owl, Eared Grebe, maybe 65 other species.  A quiet beach on a quiet day. Who can complain about that?

Most of our winter birds are still with us, including: up to 11 species of duck, 3 loons, 4 grebes, 3 cormorants, 4 herons & egrets, 4 raptors, 4 plovers, 8 sandpipers, 12 gulls & terns, 2 hummingbirds and 22 species of passerines. Come and meet them all.

Adult (& older kids) Walk 8:30 a.m. – Expect 50-75 species this time of year. Over the bridges and down to the shore. We put out special effort to make our monthly Malibu Lagoon walks attractive to first-time and beginning birdwatchers. So please, if you are at all worried about coming on a trip and embarrassing yourself because of all the bird experts, we remember our first trips too. Someone had to show us the birds, and it’s our turn now.

Children and Parents Walk 10:00 a.m. – One hour session. We start at 10:00 for a shorter walk and to allow time for families to get it together on a sleepy Sunday morning. We will have kid-experienced leaders so please bring the kids to the beach! We have an ample supply of binoculars that children can use without striking terror into their parents – we want to see families enjoying nature.
