Kilpatrick Football Opens Season Next Month

The Mustangs play nine games, starting with Rio Hondo Prep in Arcadia.

Last season was a struggle for the "Gridiron Gang" from Camp Kilpatrick. The Mustangs football team went 3-7, finished sixth in the Alpha League standings and missed the playoffs.

Coach Derek Ayers' squad will try to improve its record this fall, but doing so will require major improvement on both sides of the ball. In 2010, Kilpatrick was outscored by an average of 20.2 points while scoring more than 20 points only once (in a 25-0 victory over Santee).

With no home stadium, Kilpatrick will once again play all of its games on the road, beginning with a scrimmage Sept. 2 at Palisades.

The 2011 season kicks off Sept. 16 with a non-league game in Arcadia against Rio Hondo Prep, which defeated the Mustangs 44-12 last year.

The next week, Kilpatrick travels to downtown Los Angeles to take on Santee. The week after that, the Mustangs will try to avenge a 28-12 loss last year to Brentwood.

Kilpatrck will open Alpha League play against Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth on Oct. 6 at Granada Hills High. Sierra Canyon routed Kilpatrick 47-8 at the same site last year on its way to finishing second in the league.

On Oct. 14, the Mustangs travel to Downey to play Calvary Chapel, a school Kilpatrick edged 20-16 last year. Following that is a Thursday night game against Marshall at Pasadena High.

The last two league games figure to be Kilpatrick's toughest. First is a Friday night clash with North Hollywood Campbell Hall at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa.

In the season finale, the Mustangs will travel 90 miles northeast to Lancaster to face defending league champion Paraclete at Antelope Valley College.

If Kilpatrick makes the playoffs, it will compete in the CIF Southern Section's East Valley Division.
