Malibu High Water Polo Loses Double Overtime Thriller

The Sharks lose to Rio Mesa, 13-12, in a rematch of last year's CIF championship.

The boys varsity water polo team lost a thrilling double overtime game in Malibu on Tuesday. The final score was 13-12.

The game was close the entire way, and the teams traded the lead several times. The Sharks were up by one at halftime, and had an 8-7 lead after three quarters. Malibu fell behind in the fourth quarter, but tied the game with 40 seconds remaining in regulation on a goal by Jens Cole. 

The Sharks had the lead in the first overtime until Rio Mesa scored a goal in the final 10 seconds to tie the game and force another extra period. The Sharks took a 12 to 11 lead in the second overtime, but Rio Mesa scored two goals, including one with 3.7 seconds left on the clock for the win.

Despite the tough loss, the Sharks had balanced scoring, including goals from Jordan Clarke, Theo Guillemot, Michael Mitze, Emmet Pierson and Cole. Dane Sartorius was solid in the goal with several excellent saves. 

The game was a rematch of last year's CIF Division 6 championship, which Rio Mesa won 9-4.

Malibu's junior varsity team won 7-2 and the frosh/sophomore team won 6-1.

The Sharks are hosting a 20-team water polo tournament at Malibu High Thursday through Saturday. Malibu's junior varsity team will play Thursday at 3 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. The varsity squad will play Friday at 3:20 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. Saturday's schedule will depend on the results of those games.
