Malibu Players Head to Ojai Tennis Tournament

Residents are entered in this week's event in the junior, high school and Open divisions.

The 111th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament is being played this week in Ventura County, and several Malibu residents will be playing in the high school and junior divisions. The draws were released Tuesday, and matches begin Thursday morning at sites in and around Ojai. 

freshman is seeded No. 7 in the boys' 14s singles division, and earned a first-round bye. He will play either Jack La Plante of Ojai or Daunte Harris of Long Beach in the second round Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at West County Drive courts in Ojai. 

In the girls' 16s division, Malibu High sophomore  is entered in the 64-player draw, and has a bye in the first round. She will play either Bridget Etchegaray of Yorba Linda or Francesca Katafias of Ladera Ranch in the second round Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the upper Ojai courts on Santa Paula Road.

Lurking in the same half of the draw in the girls' 16s singles is Sharks freshman , who plays Lauren Radding of Ojai in the first round at 11 a.m. at the Linda Flora Road courts in Rancho Matilija. The winner will play second-seeded Francis Dean of Arcadia at 3:30 p.m. at the same site. 

In the boys' CIF singles division, Malibu resident of Los Angeles Loyola High will play Marc Walter of Lake Balboa Birmingham in the first round Thursday at 11 a.m. at Villanova School. The winner will play either Lestter Yeh of or Tyler Pham of in the second round of the 64-player draw Thursday, also at Villanova.

All 14s, 16s and CIF division singles and doubles finals are Saturday. 

In the women's Open doubles division, Malibu's is paired with Page Bartelt of Mission Viejo and they will play Dina McBride of Woodland Hills and Zoe Scandals of San Diego in the first-round of the eight-team bracket at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ojai Valley Inn. If they win, Steinmetz and Bartelt would play again at 3:30 p.m. at the same location.

The women's Open doubles final is Sunday at 2 p.m. at Libbey Park in downtown Ojai.
