Malibu Sharks Leap Into Track & Field Season

The Sharks held their own across the day long competition with several standout performances.

The 2013 Track and Field season got underway on Saturday, as Malibu High joined 21 other high schools at the Oaks Christian Invitational in Westlake Village.

In the Varsity Field events, Junior Linus Gordon scored a victory in the meet’s high jump competition with a leap of 5-10.

Dyer Pettijohn finished fourth in the Triple Jump, with a personal record of 40-10, in addition to top 10 finishes in the Jong Jump and High Jump.

Cooper Barton led the Varsity throwers including a PR of 70-11 in the discus. The Frosh/Soph competitors were led by Sophie Johnson’s top 5 finish in the discus.

In the Track events, the meet began for the Sharks with a victory in the Frosh/Soph girls 1500m, as Caroline Pietrzyk finished in front of the field of 37 competitors with PR of 5:09.

The Sharks posted several Top 10 finishes throughout the meet, including Alexis Hada(Girls Varsity) and Justin Baldinger (Boys F/S)in the 100m; and Freshman Madeline Ward’s outstanding “Three-peat” with Top 10’s in the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, and Long Jump. 

The Shark’s meet concluded in strong fashion with the Girls Distance Medley tandem of Caitlin Myers, Lauren Murphy, Carmen Flood and Caroline Pietrzyk posting a very exciting come-from-behind First Place finish setting a new record of 14:06.33.

The Sharks will compete in next Saturday’s Tri- County Invitational at Moorpark High School before the League competition gets underway in Santa Paula on March 14.
